To get into the more story based discussions, you have to know who's being referenced, There's many different characters so for now we can start with the 4 who end up being brought up more often than others
Kirby
King DeDeDe
Meta Knight
Bandana Waddle Dee
These 4 have been more common than any other.
Although Bandana Waddle dee is newer than the other 3 as far as relevance goes.
He's sorta in most media, though sometimes he's just waddledee, or just didn't exist...
in most recent Kirby games, (fighters, DLDX, Forgottenland, does robobot and 3DX count...????) He's the default 2nd player, DDD and Metaknight are in RTDL and fighters, but bandana comes first.
But Keeby is also a common player 2, but they're not really refered to as their own character anymore?
That's besides the point.
Getting into story stuff, the first game starts with King DDD stealing all the food in Dreamland.
Kirby "Comes in with the spring breeze." Where he's from is unknown, as is if he existed before this at all.
But disregarding his foggy origins, he then proceeds to fight DDD, releasing the food back across Dreamland.
Dreamland being the country King DDD is king of, regardless of how he came to be king, it's Located on Planet Popstar,
There's a few games but the next to be discussed is Nightmare in Dreamland/Kirby's Adventure. Featuring, you'll never guess. A nightmare in Dreamland (they're practically the same storywise)
To start, in Dreamland, there's this magical fountain.
The Fountain of Dreams.
It gives good dreams to all the residents of Dreamland, so long as it's not broken.
But when a being of nightmare decends infecting the fountain, the king decides to break the centerpiece, the starrod, source of the fountain's power, giving the pieces to people around Dreamland to protect.
This also has the unintentional side effect of removing all the dreams from Dreamland citizens, neither nightmares or dreams, leaving a lot of Dreamland unable to sleep.
In a mess of miscomunication, Kirby figures this is King Dedede acting maliciously again.
And so Kirby defeats most the people trying to protect the pieces of the Starrod. Metaknight decides Kirby might actually have a chance at beating Nightmare, and helps out some, before dueling for the second to last piece.
After Metaknight, Kirby confronts King Dedede.
Kirby defeats King Dedede, finally repairing the Starrod, but King Dedede tries to hold him back. Pleading for Kirby to not place the rod back on the fountain.
Kirby ignores this and places the rod back onto the fountain.
.
.
From the fountain Nightmare errupts.
King Dedede and Kirby freak out, before King Dedede decides to launch Kirby up to Nightmare to finish the fight.
.
.
This fight also destroys half of the moon
Anyways, Kirby wins, dreams return, and an anime based specifically on this one game was made... but for like... the remake version.
The anime is irrelevant to the current lore discussion since it's its own deal.
Same with other stuff. Just not the same universe.
Now onto fun stuff, The Dark matter Trillogy.
This storyline is made up of 3 separate games, Dreamland 2, Dreamland 3 and Crystal shards.
This story begins on the Rainbow islands, where King Dedede has stolen the rainbow drops, which connect the islands by rainbow bridges.
Kirby, and his animal friends, go after the rainbow drops hidden accross the island.
In right to left order being, Kine, Rick, and Coo.
.
After gaining each rainbow drop, Kirby confronts King Dedede, who's acting rather odd.
While normally being much more energetic, the king instead is sleeping through the fight.
Eventually Kirby is victorious against King Dedede, who if you don't collect all the rainbow drops, remains laying down and nothing happens.
But if you do collect all the rainbow drops, it's revealed that King Dedede was possessed by a matter most dark, Dark matter swordsman.
.
DMS is a scout for a larger group, to sense whether the planet is worth consuming. And/Or destroy anything in the way of that.
But the Rainbow drops aren't going to let this happen, uniting themselves into the Rainbow sword, Kirby is once again launced into a battle against an enemy.
(weird how rainbow focused a mostly monochrome gameboy game is but not the point)
Kirby takes flight as he vanquishes Dark matter swordsman from Popstar...
But this isn't the end yet.
.
.
.
Far away, a large mass feels a tug towards something.
Dark matter swordsman found a planet.
.
.
.
On Popstar, Kirby and friends are enjoying their time together, Fishing and doing other fun stuff.
A blob, falls from the sky, bumping into Kirby.
The blob doesn't say much, but the friends decide to call them Gooey.
Now Kirby has a whole group of friends, with Gooey added.
New friends being, Nago, Chuchu, Pitch.
.
.
.
One day, while Gooey and Kirby are fishing...
A darkness consumes the sky.
The only light being from the gleaming red eye.
From the dark sky, bunches of darkness fall.
Deciding to act, Gooey and Kirby go to deal with this threat.
Gooey is the player 2 in this game, being able to use every copy ability Kirby can.
.
.
.
While traveling around Popstar, Kirby and Gooey meet up with their friends, who are scattered arround.
Additionally, many of the people of Popstar seem to have gotten scattered, or otherwise hurt by the invasion.
Kirby helping these people, is gifted a Heart star.
He also gains one for aiding the possessed.
For each area, one of the Popstar residents is possessed, 1st Whispy woods, to the last being King Dedede.
.
.
.
Making their way through Popstar, they eventually end up in a frosty area called, Iceberg. in the center, a large castle that looks like King Dedede but with a foreboding red eye in the center.
.
.
.
Reaching the top of the tower, Kirby faces off against another weird Dedede. Although this time, they already have an Idea what's wrong.
Defeating King Dedede, again leads to 2 endings, if you didn't help everyone and gain all the heart stars, Dedede is defeated but...
During the credits, as Gooey and Kirby are running along...
Gooey stalls behind,
As the end credits finish listing off the bosses a final one is left in silhouette.
.
.
If you collect all the heart stars you end up expelling the darkness from King Dedede, from him, Zero the leader of darkmatter expells.
The Heart stars surround you, granting you a weapon powerful enough to face Zero, the Love-love stick.
.
Being shot back into the sky, followed by Gooey, you face off against Zero with the Love-Love stick at your side.
.
.
.
Once Kirby and Gooey finally get Zero to their final few moments, they shed the white skin around their eye.
.
.
Taking their final stand, Zero tries anything to defeat Kirby and Gooey, but in the end, Kirby and Gooey succeed in defeating Zero.
At last, Darkmatter has been vanquished from Popstar...
.
..
...
....
...
..
.
On a planet... in Popstar's solar system...
Many fairies live out their lives....
.
.
.
.
Ripple Star
.
One day, on Ripple star, The protector of their protective crystal, Ribbon, is happily wandering around, it's quite a happy day.
...
But a darkness looms over Ripplestar.
.
Acting fast, Ribbon runs back to the location of the Crystal, where the Queen of Ripple star is there waiting. The Queen urges Ribbon to take the crystal far away and get help. Rippon quickly agrees, picking up the crystal and flying from Ripple Star.
Unfortunately, as Ribbon is escaping Ripple star, Dark matter follows.
.
The Darkmatter slams into Ribbon and the crystal, breaking pieces off with each hit. Eventually the entire crystal shatters.
Ribbon is sent flying into the nearest planet...
...
..
.
Landing directly into Kirby, who had been living his life happily.
Ribbon, in horror picks up a shard that had landed nearby,
Kirby confused, looks around.
Picking up another shard he tosses it to Ribbon.
Combining the 2 shards into a slightly bigger shard.
.
.
Ribbon looks around, before realizing the shooting stars around them are actually other crystal shards.
Disressed, Ribbon explains the situation to Kirby who agrees to help.
.
.
.
.
Searching across Popstar for Crystal shards, the duo run into friends, who thanks to the darkmatter that followed Ribbon and trying to prevent the shards from being brought together, have been possessed after getting too close to a crystal shard.
.
.
Defeating each of them, Adeline, Waddle dee (possibly bandana although this is literally never confirmed outright but is sorta implied since Bandana is the only other waddle dee to have similar importance) and King Dedede.
.
.
Adeline was also in Dreamland 3, again not entirely confirmed, but "Ado" vs "Adeline" and they're the only humans in the entire series. And they literally look nearly identical why is this even a debate???
I mean like, the only differences is artstyle...
Anyways not the point
.
Eventually our heroes find all the Crystal shards in Popstar, to which the shards create a portal to the location of more shards, in this case, the rest of the planets in Gamble Galaxy
.
Or at the very least, Popstar's solar system
.
The planet Kirby and friends arrive on after Popstar, is the crumbling Rock star
.
.
Collecting the shards, you're met with Pix.
To defeat them you have to inhale the matching color, it sucks I hate them.
.
.
Finishing the fight, the crystal once again responds, sending the group to Aqua Star.
.
.
The team once again goes through and collects the shards, being met with Acro at the end.
Acro was also in the previous game but doesn't have any drama about not actually being Acro from dl3. Acro is just Orca backwards though, so theres that.
.
.
.
.
The next planet, Neo star, is rather unstable, collecting the shards, the heroes are on edge...
.
.
Railroad rides and running from things aside Kirby and friends are met with Magman.
.
He stays in the background so it's super annoying.
.
Defeating Magman, the entirety of Neo star begins to blow up.
2:15 is about when
.
.
Escaping the destruction of Neo star, the 5 heroes are sent to Shiver star.
.
.
Or... in other words, the most questionable planet outside of maybe Forgotten land.
You'd think you'd only need 1 earth, but nooo kirby has like 2.
Anyways. This planet is entirely frozen over and is definently not trying to say something with the abundance of factories etc. Ignoring that, I kinda wonder how Shiver exists so close to Popstar when it's almost certainly Earth.
I guess Milkyway wishes could imply Gamble and Milkyway are the same galaxy?
I don't know.
Technically jumping way ahead, or behind, technically this story is out of order since I'm going by games rather than what actually happened when.
Shiver star is mildly implied to be the initial home of the "ancients" who existed long before the games begin, they're mentioned, but don't become large mentions till Magolor, and don't see much conclusion until Hyness.
.
.
Defeating the Robotic boss of Shiver star (I already yapped too much about it, and they're not that important outside of the robot in Robobot and RTDL and the gc game being sorta the same idea...It's not that important)
Regardless, The heroes make their way to Ripple star at long last.
.
.
.
The planet covered in darkness, our heroes enter from the sewer system to try and get to the castle of Ripple star.
.
.
Taking on the corrupted Ripple star, you are shot into the air once more, this time to fight an odd foe.
.
A floating white dohecahedron with eyes on every side.
Shooting out your own copy abilites back at you...
To defeat miracle matter you must combine the right copy abilities with eachother to deal damage.
.
Destroying Miracle matter, you return to Ripple star, met with the Queen of the fairies.
.
If you didn't collect all the Crystal shards, Ribbon will stay with Queen Ripple while the Popstarians return home with little fanfare.
As the 4 fly away... Queen Ripple grins at the camera.
.
You didn't free Ripple star.
...
..
.
But if you did collect every crystal shard, the shards react to Queen ripple, Expelling the darkness inside her.
...
A new star is added to your roster.
...
Entering Dark star, you are met with red interior and darkness surrounding you.
...
While making your treck towards the final boss, your friends aid you along the way.
...
...
King Dedede launches you from an extended panel, Ribbon catches you in the air, as you both catch the Crystal shards, which have now turned into a lazer gun.
...
Slowly, something rises from beneath you.
...
...
Zero 2 Faces back at you. Having shed their skin previously to survive their previous encounter with Kirby, resurrecting more powerful than before.
You also can't close the game during this fight, instead being met with a "Keep going, Kirby!" So that's fun
...
Ribbon and Kirby fly and dodge the oncomming attacks while shooting their own. With each hit weakening Zero more and more till they can do real damage against them.
...
Kirby and Ribbon strike Zero 2 down, finally freeing Ripple star and it's people from the hatred infesting the population.
Once the quintet return to Ripple star, Queen Ripple holds a reward ceremony. Gifting each of the heroes a crystal medal.
...
End of the Darkmatter trillogy.
...
...
Kirby Super star / Kirby Super star Ultra
Technically several games but I'm gonna make this slightly short.
...
Gourmet race is a challenge between Kirby and King Dedede on who can eat the most food and reach the finish line first.
...
Dynablade is about the bird Dynablade and Kirby helping her babies eat after beating her up.
...
Great Cave offensive, Kirby digs up treasure from a cave... and has weird copy ability rules.
...
Spring breeze, just the first game remastered, DDD steals all the food, Kirby beats him up.
...
Revenge of the Meta Knights, Meta knight is fed up with Dreamland not taking threats seriously, and he along with his crew, the not so subtle Metaknights, attempt to dethrone Dedede.
...
More interestingly than the previous games, this introduces the Halberd. The Metaknights' Battle ship. And the Metaknights, Dynablade is also relatively important but the Metaknights get more mentions so... sucks to suck I guess...
...
Revenge of the King, only in Ultra, this game mode technically introduces Bandana waddle dee. Tldr Revenge of the Metaknights but King dedede instead.
King Dedede, wanting to finally one up Kirby, takes on one last challenge to prove himself against the young hero, in an arena style fight they square up to prove which of them is truly the strongest of them.
Bandana is the only one to stay behind the king as he fights Kirby, and comforts him after his loss, the other waddle dees follow in suite.
Also the point in time where Dedede stops being an antagonist intentionally.
...
Milky way wishes, Mr Shine and Mr bright, The sun and moon, are fighting! Kirby in desperation tries to find a solution... luckily. His good friend Marx is here to help!
'Hey! Hey! Hey! Can you make peace between the sun and moon?' Marx cries, Kirby listens as Marx describes the Clockwork star, Nova. And how you need stars from across the galaxy to summon them!
...
Marx explains, Clockwork Nova can grant wishes! Yes, Kirby can wish the argument well! Wish for peace of the Sun and Moon!
Collecting the stars... across the planets... Kirby summons Nova.
...
...
Just as Kirby is about to wish the Sun and Moon well... He is slammed out of the way...
Marx...
"I wish... to control ALL of Planet Popstar!"
...
Kirby is left stunned as his friend stole his wish, for such selfish purposes,
...
Marx admits that it was actually he who made the Sun and Moon fight, knowing Kirby's powers could easily summon Nova.
Now, Sending the clockwork star directly towards Popstar, the Sun and Moon suddenly put aside their differences to stop the Clockwork star, but they can only hold out for so long.
The Stars Kirby collected, now bring forth, creating a starship to flythrough Nova with.
...
Flying directly into Nova, Kirby destroys the clockwork stars heart, to which Marx reacts enraged. Finally taking you on himself.
Eventually, Kirby gets the upper hand, defeating Marx and sending them hurdling into the Clockwork star Nova.
...
Nova died, and with it, all the relevant parts of Superstar.
...
Gameboy games!
Kirby and the Amazing mirror!
Kirby is struck by Meta knight?! Splitting him into 4 different colored variants of himself!
...
Little does Kirby know, this 'MetaKnight' is an imposter, as the real Metaknight had fought this copy, getting sealed high into the air into the dimensional mirror!
The Kirbies, coming to their friend's aid, have to fix the dimensional mirror, which had been shattered by this faker! To do this, you must traverse the Mirror world behind the mirrors! Where things are both similar and different to Kirby's Popstar...
...
(Katam is the least linear Kirby game, you can go anywhere, any time, but you must collect all the shards to free Metaknight.)
...
Along your journey you run into the Mirror world Kirby, Shadow Kirby, A grey palette version of our pink hero, He gives you aid along his journey... (This game is also multiplayer... great game btw)
Shadow also changes designs weirdly often? So does Dedede, but SK has way less mentions so it's weird that they're inconsistent with it.
It's not even a modern vs old thing, Shadow Kirby appears grey in Star allies, and both appear in RTDL DX as masks...But in Kirby fighters they're purple... promotional art has both...
Some people think SK changes when using a Copy ability, since they're almost always shown in the purple form with a copy ability...
Maybe?
SK and purple SK also act different. Sk is shy and doesn't interact much, they also don't fight you, even if you fight them. KF SK, or Purple SK, is antagonistic, which might be because of the buddy fighters tower? but I don't know if the og KF had a mind control thing, maybe a messed up Kirby clone that just looks like SK???? I literally have no clue.
Anyways
Durring this, you run into the imposter, who you discover is in reality Dark metaknight, the mirror world Metaknight, and agent of Darkmind
...
Collecting the shards of the mirror, the four Kirbies fix the mirror at long last.
But your adventure isn't quite over yet... Metaknight may be freed, but the Mirror world is still held under the control of Darkmind,
Metaknight, Thinking fast, throws you his sword, which at this point is, The master sword, not the loz one, althought sword kirby is a loz reference... Also Galaxia comes after. Master is smooth, Galaxia is the jagged one
Using the Master Sword, Kirby is able to take on Darkmind, to free the Mirror world, this is very entertaining when you constantly call the other Kirbies to help you after they revive like little meat shields... this is less appreciated in multiplayer... be warned.
...
Darkmind's battle is full of twisting turns and running through mazes with extreme speed, luckily your Sword will most likely survive most things, and will respawn each phase.
Getting to the final FINAL phase is a bit harder than it looks, but once you're there it's more of a final send off, as you and the other kirbies board Warp Stars... did I explain what those are? whatever
And the four of you race against Dark mind in a final showdown.
(I'm really sleep deprived, it's a final send off because the battle ship showdown is the credits??? no wait Im not going insane, the battle still happens, it just continues into the credits)
...
Thanks to kirby, Peace has been gifted to the Mirror world, Shadow Kirby flies alongside you before returning home, promising to protect their home from now on.
...
I have no clue why I said Gameboy games like there were more. I mean there are. But starstackers lore isn't realy relevant and I do not care to find out if the poker version of Kirby has some crazy lore implications.
... DS games...? I guess?
Squeak Squad
KIRBY'S CAKE GET'S STOLEN. AND HE KILLS EVERYONE
Okay, Jokes aside, that's not exactly what happens.
On an average day, Kirby is about to eat his cake when... just as he's about to dig in... his cake disapears!...
Assuming the worst... Kirby goes after King Dedede... but not before being confronted with these mysterious thieves...
The Squeak squad! A traveling bandit group led by Daoarch, the entire group are mice, hence the "Squeak"
...
King Dedede is ambushed by Kirby, who seems a tad irritated at the lack of cake... but Dedede seems more focused on something else! The Squeaks! They've come to King Dedede for something...
Kirby notices something with the Squeaks... A chest! His cake must be here!
Dedede, for some reason Kirby doesn't understand, Throws him at the Squeaks... Clearly, he has not been the only one robbed by these bandits!
Truly... This is not Kirby's day.
...
Annoyed, Kirby chases after the Squeaks, finally reaching their hideout, He's about to take back his chest when...!
META KNIGHT?! of all people steal Kirby's cake! The Sweet toothed traitor!
...
Eventually, after collecting all 7 star pieces, Kirby can chase Metaknight!... and the Squeaks can too...
Meta knight fights against Kirby, trying to get the brat to stop chasing him and give him a moment to explain... Unfortunately... He's no match for Kirby.
...
Kirby is overjoyed! The cake! It must be in this chest!
...
Of course... Kirby never understood why his friends would steal his cake... Y'know it is rather odd...
Before Kirby can contemplate this truly invigorating thought, another thief steals his damn cake! The Squeaks again...
Really! What did everyone want with KIRBY's CAKE!
unfortunately... for Kirby's appetite... The squeaks open the chest without wait!
...
huh!
What! Oh no! The cake... no... A great darkness comes from the chest! Possessing Daoarch!
Perhaps in hindsight... Listening to Dedede and Metaknight might be a good habit...
...
...
Now Kirby faces against Dark Daoarch and Dark nebula! which despite the name is the same Daoarch, just possessed, although there's probably a Dark Daoarch in the mirror world...
Eventually Kirby knocks Dark Daoarch down... freeing his weapon, the Triple star from his possessed hands!
Taking hold of the Triple star, Kirby defeats Dark nebula... and probably owes an apology to the bruised King and most likely irritated mentor...
...
The Squeaks did offer a replacement cake... so all was well in the end ( they also send you a happy birthday when you play on your birthday! )
...
...
Mass Attack
Kirby gets split in 10 by the death god Necrodeus and must follow your cursor as you play as their heart and not kirby in this game.
The kirbies die in 2 hits, and Kirby canonically can die in this game! (every other game, Kirby doesn't die in a gameover, But is instead knocked out. Here... not so much)
Kirby saves the 10 islands from permanent death and darkness and is returned to a single entity, if only another game could say the same... (mass attack also has references to characters from both games and anime)
...
...
Going into the Wii, Sorry fluff, but we're going straight to Magolor... I'm running out of time
...
Return to Dreamland
Kirby, King Dedede and Bandee are hanging out, and by hanging out I mean they're chasing eachother, Kirby stole King Dedede's cake, because no one learns anything.
Nearby Metaknight enjoys a book, clearly he enjoys listening to the peaceful atmosphere of a grown man yelling at a child who is yelling right back... for some reason.
Magolor KILLS EVERYONE THE END
